Renting with Pets

Previously, the Berkeley rental market has not been very pet-friendly. Recently, however, many rentals have become open to pets, but many do require a pet fee. Renting an apartment with a pet requires an extra degree of responsibility, so be sure you are up for the challenge.

To find rentals that indicate they are pet-friendly, custom filter listings. In the housing search page, select "more" along the filters bar and then check "Pets Allowed" to only see rentals that are pet-friendly.

Typically, if an apartment states that it is not pet-friendly, they will not allow you to bring your pet unless under special circumstances, such as service animals. However, if an apartment you are set on won't allow for your pet to stay with you, it doesn't hurt to reach out to the landlord about the situation. Let them know that you would be willing to provide references about your pet from previous landlords, or if you would be willing to pay an extra pet deposit. Never bring your pet to a property unless asked to by a landlord.
